Christian writers encouraging one another
The decibel level rises as, one after another, people enter the room and begin to catch up on the news of each other’s lives. It’s been a month since they last met and a lot has happened.
This informal conversation and networking takes place naturally as these people, once strangers, have become friends. They’ve come actually to like each other. They represent a community of Christians who share the love and profession of writing, and the enthusiasm becomes obvious as the meeting gets underway.
This gathering takes place every month, September to June, and provides a fellowship, a support system, an opportunity to learn from one another, discuss topics of interest around writing, and participate in mini-workshops. This is the Surrey/White Rock chapter of The Word Guild, a Canada-wide association of writers and editors who write from a Christian worldview perspective.
Members of the group range from well-published authors to beginners, from those who have published in more than one genre for many years to those who write only for their own enjoyment and may never publish. The genres represented in their writing include journalism, nonfiction prose, memoir, novels, articles, blogs, poetry, drama, and publishing.
The group welcomes newcomers, and newcomers do keep appearing, having heard about the group by word of mouth or having been invited by another group member. They soon feel at home, receive support and encouragement, and begin to share in the conversation. It’s amazing to see how many people “out there” have written, or want to learn how to write, or to improve their skills. Some are seeking a forum where they can present their work.
The Word Guild exists to promote the writing of Christians and to encourage them to publish, to increase the presence of the Christian voice in the marketplace. Their slogan is ‘Writers Helping Writers’. The following three paragraphs, taken from The Word Guild website (https://thewordguild.com/about/about-the-word-guild), clearly state its composition, vision, and mission.
“The Word Guild is a growing community of more than 325 Canadian writers, editors, speakers, publishers, booksellers, librarians and other interested individuals who are Christian. From all parts of Canada and many denominational and cultural backgrounds, we affirm a common statement of faith and are united in our passion for the written word.
Our Vision: The Word Guild has a vision to bring God’s hope, grace, and reconciliation in Christ through the written words of its members.
Our Mission: The Word Guild has a mission to organize and serve Canadians who communicate through the written word from a Judeo-Christian worldview, so that they can increase in faith and excellence and inspire all readers.
The Surrey/White Rock chapter currently meets on the fourth Thursday each month, September through June, at Crescent Gardens, 1222 King George Boulevard, Surrey, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. You are most welcome to check it out.
