Merton and the Post-Secular Search for a Good Country

You are invited to this free public talk by Mary Jo Leddy.

In his early writings, Thomas Merton identified his search for the true self with what he called “The True North”. In her latest book, Why Are We Here? A Meditation on Canada (Novalis 2019), Mary Jo Leddy explores the religious dimension of the search for the common good in Canada. She suggests it is to be found in taking responsibility for the space that none of us own but for which we are all responsible.

Mary Jo Leddy is a Canadian writer and theologian, the founder of Toronto’s Romero House, and a passionate advocate for human rights and peace issues. She is the recipient of many honorary doctorates, and awards, including the Order of Canada. She has written many books, several of which feature or reflect on the work and life at Romero House, such as Radical Gratitude (Orbis 2002), and The Other Face of God: When the Stranger Calls Us Home (Orbis 2011).
