TobyMac: The Lost Demos
EP, Forefront/Capitol CMG, 2020
Seven-time GRAMMY award winner and multi-platinum artist TobyMac surprised fans this May with The Lost Demos EP that contains seven never released tracks that he rediscovered while staying home during COVID-19. These demos were recorded between 2014-2018 but did not make it onto either of his last two studio albums. The gems found here may not have the typical high-production glossy pop finish that we have come to expect from Toby but these rough mixes actually have an enduring quality that make the stellar song writing come to the forefront. Highlights include the infectious melody of the opening track “On Your Own,” the dance-friendly love song “Fighting for Your Heart,” the reggie-influenced “Drivin’ Me,” and “The Real You,” which was written for Toby’s late son, Truett.
The Blessing: Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes and Elevation Worship
In March before the world was overcome with the pandemic, Kari Jobe, Cody Carnes and Elevation Worship gathered together to write “The Blessing,” releasing it just days later via YouTube with the live video. Since then, this song has been both a prayer and anthem sung around the globe and has a combined 30 million and counting views on YouTube, has 17 million streams and has been included on Spotify’s Global Viral 50 Playlists.
This timely song has also been covered by churches around the world singing the song over the nations. Countries like the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Malaysia. On May 16 “The Blessing: Canada” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSuwlEaQi54 released on YouTube and included 125 worship leaders representing churches from across Canada. Another powerful rendition of the song was recorded at Louie Giglio’s Passion City Church in Atlanta, Georgia, that was recorded for Mother’s Day and was made possible by one of their welcome greeters who plays in the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. He arranged for his friends to join him, socially distanced, in their church where the empty auditorium normally has seats for the congregation. The Blessing (Symphonic Version) – Passion City Church
The song can be found on the new Elevation Worship album Graves Into Gardens released May 1.
