Canada, it’s time to pray: National Day of Prayer,

There are moments in the journey of every nation when the call to united prayer becomes elevated. There is a sense in the hearts of many that for Canada, that moment is now.

From the beginning of time, prayer has been the divine lifeline between heaven and earth – a sacred dialogue that invites the presence, power, and purposes of God into our circumstances. But there is something especially potent when prayer is not just individual, but unified and corporate. According to scripture, when an entire people humbles themselves together the results can be nothing short of transformational. This is the heart of 2 Chron. 7:14: If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sins and heal their land.

This is the heart behind the inauguration of an annual National Day of Prayer in Canada, a non-partisan, Christ-centred gathering with one goal: to serve Canada in humble Bible-based prayer. On July 11 & 12, Christian believers from coast to coast are being invited to participate in this groundbreaking event in our nation’s capital, Ottawa.

A historic first for Canada

Unlike the United States, Australia, South Africa and several other nations, Canada has never had a nationally recognized day dedicated solely to prayer. That is changing this year, as hundreds of leaders from across the nation – spanning denominations, cultural backgrounds, and provinces – will gather in the nation’s capital to pray for Canada.

Organizers emphasize that this gathering is not only focused on the many issues of our day – as important as many of those issues are – but on future generations in Canada. “What is so moving about this particular event is that it is not just a one-time event,” says National Day of Prayer Organizing Committee Chair Faytene Grasseschi, who has been organizing prayer events for Canada over the last several decades. “This time we are setting into motion something that our children and grandchildren will carry on after us.  We are building a memorial of prayer for our nation. We want our children to grow up and say, ‘I remember when my parents gathered together to pray for Canada – now it is our turn to take that baton and be faithful in our generation.’ So, in many ways, we aren’t just organizing an event for 2025, but also for 2075.”

A weekend of prayer, worship, and unity

The National Day of Prayer events will begin on Friday, July 11, with a large worship and prayer gathering at The Metropolitan Bible Church (The Met) in Ottawa. The evening will focus on unified intercession for key areas of national life – our government, families, churches, economy, security, and the spiritual climate of the land. On the morning of Saturday, July 12, the March for Jesus will fill the streets of downtown Ottawa with songs, praise, and intercession as believers walk and pray through the city. That afternoon, all will converge on the lawn of Parliament Hill for a powerful worship and prayer service calling on God to move mightily in our day.

Why Pray for a Nation?

Some might ask: does prayer for nations really matter? Scripture gives a resounding yes. In moments of crisis and turning points throughout the Bible, God moved in response to united, humble prayer. The repentance of Nineveh, the reforms of Josiah, the revival under Ezra – all were rooted in national moments of prayer and fasting. Prayer aligns our hearts with heaven. It softens hearts, brings needed breakthroughs, and releases divine wisdom for leaders. It is the spiritual work that prepares the ground for real transformation – personally, culturally, and nationally. If there was ever a time when Canada was in need of healing, unity, divine wisdom and restoration, arguably that time is right now. Let this be the year Canada turns to heaven in a new way. Let it be the beginning of something our children and grandchildren will thank us for. Let it be the year we say, with one voice and one heart: “Canada, it’s time to come together and pray.”

A call to every believer

This July, you are invited to be part of this historic moment. Whether you are a pastor, business leader, student, intercessor, or simply someone who loves this country – your voice and presence are valued. This is not about spectacle or spotlight. This is about serving our nation in the most powerful way possible – through prayer.

We believe that as we humble ourselves and seek His face, God will hear, forgive, and heal our land. And that Canada will arise in her calling – as a nation of peace, righteousness and purpose.
