The Districts of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows lie on the north shore of the Fraser River. With the striking skyline of mountains to the north, the majestic Fraser River to the south and the Stave and Pitt Rivers forming other boundaries, the communities have a sense of ‘small town’ living, although their combined population has recently been reported to be over 100,000. Two large bridges link Maple Ridge to Langley over the Fraser River to the south, and Pitt Meadows to Tri-Cities to the west. The West Coast Express train links Mission, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows and the Tri-Cities to downtown Vancouver.
Maple Ridge / Pitt Meadows are unlike other Lower Mainland municipalities for being largely 'bedroom communities'. Large numbers travel to work elsewhere. There is no visible 'downtown' and few ‘big box’ stores or major Malls. Historically there has been a very low proportion of visible minorities, although because of relatively low house prices this is changing.
The LIGHT is preparing a major study 'Church in...' (to be published in May's issue).
