In a Crowd of Thousands – The Calgary Prayer Breakfast

September 16, 2025 by P R Leave a Comment

By The Calgary Prayer Breakfast organizing committee

In a crowd of thousands, gathered at City Hall last night (September 14, 2025), was the recurring theme: we are in a spiritual battle. A truth that’s never been in question, but oh so palpable in this defining moment, as across the world, a hero of truth, faith, and courage is grieved.

What? is the key question. What will be our part? as we witness a generation awakening to grave spiritual realities.

Throngs of young people brought homemade signs like ‘Jesus Saves’, and ‘What the enemy meant for Evil, God will turn into Good’.  Friends, we are being viscerally reminded of the Apostle Paul’s words in 2nd Corinthians 10:3-5: “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”

God has given us all the reasons and answers we need, to have hope. But how are these hopes unlocked? We are told in Zechariah that it is “not by might, nor by power” but by the Spirit of God.  Our humble prayers, our faith, prompt the response of God. When I stood in that crowd last night, I was overcome with the thought that perhaps God permitted the death of Charlie Kirk to shake us and wake us to our spiritual battle and this question: what will be my part?

In just over 5 weeks, on October 23rd, please consider being part of this year’s annual Calgary prayer breakfast.  If you talk to anyone who has attended this event over the years, they will tell you that the CLPB is not just a social get together.  This is Our Morning, when all schedules and responsibilities are set aside for one purpose, to gather in faith, in hope, and prayer. Friends I really believe that many prayers, over many years, are being answered before our eyes, right now.

God is calling us to a new seriousness regarding the spiritual battle this generation is awakening to. The sobering reality that all the hopes we have for our children, our families, our neighbours, our city, province, nation, and world… will not be realized by politics, but by the favour of God’s mercy bestowed upon us. May God Bless You, and if you are able, please consider being part of this year’s CLPB.  If you can’t be with us, please join us in spirit by setting aside some time to pray that morning… this is the key to this defining moment.

And PS: the CLPB weekly prayer breakfast meets every Thursday at 7am. Phil’s Restaurant Glenmore + Elbow. All are welcome.
