10 Tips for Parents + Invitation to BCCA’s Kindergarten Open House

Starting Kindergarten is an exciting milestone—for both children and parents! At BC Christian Academy, we know that stepping into this new chapter can bring a mix of joy and apprehension. The good news? With a little preparation, you can help your child feel confident and ready to thrive.

Here are 10 practical tips to prepare your child for Kindergarten:

  1. Play Games Together
Turn off the screens and enjoy board games or card games as a family. These games are fun and also teach important skills like taking turns, sharing, and cooperating with others.
  2. Read Every Day
Reading with your child for at least 15 minutes daily builds focus and attention. Look at the pictures together, talk about what might happen next, and encourage your child to share their thoughts.
  3. Sing Songs and Rhymes
Simple rhymes like Humpty Dumpty or the alphabet song aren’t just fun—they help children recognize sounds and patterns, which are key early literacy skills.
  4. Practice Using Words
Encourage your child to use words to express big feelings calmly. This reduces frustration and helps them build healthy communication skills.
  5. Build Independence
Give your child opportunities to do things on their own—like putting on their coat, shoes, or backpack. Small steps like these build confidence and readiness for classroom routines.
  6. Develop Fine Motor Skills
Activities like coloring, cutting with scissors, threading beads, or building with blocks strengthen little hands and prepare children for writing.
  7. Prioritize Sleep
A well-rested child is ready to learn. Establish a bedtime routine to ensure 10–12 hours of sleep each night. Consistent rest helps children focus and thrive.
  8. Focus on Nutrition
Healthy meals and snacks give your child the energy to learn, play, and grow. Balanced choices also help them stay alert throughout the day.
  9. Encourage Helping at Home
Invite your child to take part in small chores like setting the table or cleaning up toys. These responsibilities build teamwork and responsibility—qualities teachers love to see.
  10. Practice Good Manners
Simple phrases like “please” and “thank you” go a long way in building positive relationships with classmates and teachers.

At BCCA, we believe Kindergarten is more than just learning ABCs and 123s—it’s about building character, forming friendships, and cultivating a Christ-centered foundation for a lifetime of learning.
