It’s hard to believe that the leaves are already starting to turn colour and that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. As we prepare for this season of gratitude, it’s the perfect time to not only reflect on all that God has done for us but also consider how we can be a blessing to others. The Bible reminds us, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Thanksgiving is an opportunity to extend God’s love and encouragement, speaking life and identity into the hearts of our loved ones through the gift of a blessing.
Understanding the Thanksgiving Blessing:
The act of giving a blessing is a profound way to speak life and identity into the hearts of our loved ones. It echoes God’s intention for us to answer the deepest identity questions in the lives of our children and those we love. A Thanksgiving Blessing not only acknowledges who they are but also affirms who God says they are.
The Purpose of blessing:
God’s design for a blessing is to affirm the identity of the person receiving it. A blessing answer the questions: Who am I? and Why am I here? It speaks to their value as a son or daughter, celebrates their gender as God intended, and affirms their true identity in Christ. By offering this kind of blessing, we can reinforce a person’s sense of purpose and belonging in their family and in God’s family.
Barriers to blessing:
To truly bless someone, we must separate their identity from their behaviour. A common barrier to blessing is when past mistakes or behaviours cloud how we see someone. Repenting for any hurtful or relational messages we may have unintentionally sent is critical in preparing the way for an authentic blessing. A blessing should come from a place of unconditional love, acceptance, and grace.
Preparing the blessing:
Here’s a step-by-step guide to crafting a meaningful blessing this Thanksgiving.
Step 1: Capture the Blessing in three paragraphs
Paragraph 1: Recognize their character qualities – Start by writing down one or two qualities that you are particularly thankful for in this person. These can be character traits that stand out and have had a positive impact on you or others.
Example: I am thankful for your kindness and patience. You have a remarkable ability to listen to others and make them feel heard and valued.
Paragraph 2: Acknowledge a challenge they’ve overcome – Think of a challenge the person has faced in the past year and how they handled it well. This acknowledgment will help them see their growth and resilience.
Example: This year has been tough, especially with the pressure at work and managing family life. I’ve seen how you’ve risen above the challenges, showing strength and perseverance.
Paragraph 3: Commit to support them – End with a statement of genuine commitment, letting the person know you are with them and for them.
Example: I want you to know that I am committed to standing by your side, praying for you, and encouraging you as you continue to navigate the road ahead. You are deeply loved and never alone.
Step 2: Create a Special Occasion
Plan a meaningful moment to give this blessing. It could be during a family gathering at Thanksgiving dinner or a more intimate setting when the person can fully receive your words. It is important that when you bless your loved one that you get low enough to look them eye to eye. A Thanksgiving blessing should feel significant, reminding the person that they are truly loved and valued by you.
Step 3: Extend the Blessing to Others
Once you’ve given a blessing to someone in your family, prayerfully consider who else in your life may need this affirmation. It could be a friend, a neighbour, or a young person in your community who needs encouragement. Keep in mind that blessings are not limited to just our children but can impact anyone in our circle of influence.
Thanksgiving offers a beautiful opportunity to express our gratitude to God and to one another. By preparing and giving a blessing, we not only reflect God’s heart but also provide a lasting gift that answers the deep identity questions of those we love. This year plan to be intentional in speaking life, hope, and purpose into the hearts of those God has placed in our lives. A Thanksgiving blessing can be the seed of transformation that helps shape their journey for years to come.
