Freedom and control

Very recently, my wife and I sent our first child to his first year of college. We helped him pack and prepare, drove him to the campus, got him to his room and then … left. It was a surreal moment as a parent: this movement from constant support and communication to a determined lessening of that support. There was something like grief, I think, threaded through that lazy, warm afternoon as we watched him get a key card, purchase a computer, move into his room and meet his roommate. Not a grief we felt we needed to shed tears over – it was time; it was the right moment. We’ve prepared him for the last 18+ years for this. It’s just such a long preparation for launching that it’s still a bit of a shock to the parental lobe when it happens.

It’s also a joy to watch your child grow for so long – so many years of love and care and mistakes and forgiveness – and then to watch the grace of God in motion as they take a significant social and emotional step of faith into their own autonomy. And we? We get to let go. Relinquish control and now watch and love in other ways. This is the beauty of loving freedom given in familial relationships.

And how blessed are we whom Jesus gives so many wonderful gifts as he moves us through life, giving freedom with boundary, joy with sorrow, slowly maturing us. It’s a wonderful little insight into the joy of Jesus, parenting a child to maturity.
